Baby Sean has started on cereal and I’ve committed to making all of his baby food myself, even his cereal. I had made some of my daughter’s baby food but I didn’t start till she was almost done with the pureed foods so I vowed I would make my next child’s food at home. Here are some cereal recipes to get you started.
Rice Cereal
Brown Rice contains important B vitamins, iron, fiber and essential fatty acids. I usually find a nice supply of brown rice at whole foods in their bulk aisle.
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup brown rice (ground)
- 1/4 formula or (if you’re breast-feeding use your breast milk)
The Method:
Boil water in a saucepan. Add the ground rice, stir. Simmer for about 10 minutes, keep whisking. Cool your mixture then pour into a blender. Whirl till your puree is smooth. Add milk or breast milk to reach your desired consistency. Let the cereal cool then serve. Best to serve at room temperature.
Yields 8, 2 tablespoon servings.
I find that using a blender to ground the brown rice works best. Keep a supply of ground rice on hand to make preparing your child’s cereal easier. Store your ground rice in a nice air tight container.
Oatmeal
Oats are an excellent source of vitamin E, zinc, protein and iron.
- 3/4 cups water
- 1/4 cup ground old-fashioned rolled oatmeal
- 1/4 formula or (if you’re breast-feeding use your breast milk)
The Method:
Boil water in a saucepan. Add ground oatmeal, stir. Simmer for about 10 minutes, keeping whisking. Add milk or breast milk to reach your desired consistency. Let the oatmeal cool then serve. Best to serve at room temperature.
Yields 4, 2 tablespoon servings.

I made my daughters foods but I never tried the cereal. These definately look like something I’d love to try with my son.
Best of luck to you and your little guy! I know he will love it.
Great recipe! I firmly believe in making most of the food you eat (especially for the kids)…not only is it a lot healthier, but it makes you feel good about yourself. Plus, homemade always tastes better
Yes & Yes! Totally agree
I did not know that you could make your own baby cereal! Wow, you learn something new everyday. You know, when I move out into my own place when my husband comes in, I’m going to be more organic in the way I feed my babies (when I have more someday)… I’ve always wanted to make my own baby food, but my parents aren’t supportive of that, so I buy it organic instead. I would love to make it when I’m in my own place, and I’m totally going to bookmark this so that I can make my own baby cereal too! Thanks so much for the great post!
Better late then never. I didn’t make my daughter’s food till she was older. I’ll be adding MANY more recipes as baby Sean tries new food. I’m glad you’re so interested!!
