My husband loves lighting the pit and cooking outside. Outdoor cooking is highly encouraged in my house, saves money on energy and doesn’t get the house warm or smokey. Total win-win! We’ve been doing this for a while and I finally decided to photograph our most recent drunken chicken roasted on the grill just for you.
Very first thing, you’ll have to head to WalMart, Home Depot or Amazon.com to buy a roaster. This is the one we use most often but there are many choices. We have the 7 “ Kingsford Stainless Steel Beer Can Chicken Roaster and it only cost us about $6.
Just grab a whole chicken the next time you’re out, crack open a can of beer, season the bird with your favorite seasonings, shove a can of beer into your bird and set it on the grill. Pour a little beer out from the top. You don’t want the can full, just 2/3 full will do. For a 3 lbs chicken we cook it for about 1 hour. We use Tony Chachere’s on just about everything we cook and eat so it’s only fair that I would smother my drunken chicken with it as well. All joking aside, this is a brilliant way to roast a chicken.
I’ve heard from my New Jersey family that they call this a Beer Can Chicken my Virginia friends call it the same thing. We obviously call it a Drunken Chicken here in Louisiana. I would love to know what my westcoasters call it?
We use the old standard charcoal Weber Grills for this. Once your coals are nice and hot put your chicken on, cover the top of your chicken with some foil and put the lid on making sure the vent holes are open.
The can of beer makes the chicken super moist. This is a worry free method, clean up is a breeze too. Don’t worry, it’s safe to serve the kids. The alcohol cooks off. You can even do this with a Dr. Pepper or whatever you might have on hand.
The skin is crunchy and full of flavor. Have you had a drunken chicken roasted on the grill?

Wow! This sounds amazing. Definitely a perfect summer treat.
This sounds like fun! I have never seen that kind of roaster before, now I am off to look for one!
Oh YUM! I have got to try this one!
I think you need to change the instructions from “pour a little beer” to “DRINK a little beer!”
Wow…this looks fun and yummy. I have a weber grill, I should definitely try this out!
