Moving right along. It’s now day 20 of the 31 day blog challenge. How is everyone doing? Today’s writing prompt is: What Do You Collect?
I’ve collected things on and off since I was a girl. My first collection started when we lived in San Diego, I was maybe 7 or 8. Every time my parents took us to Balboa Park we would visit a quant little shop that sold souvenirs. I can remember ascending the narrow staircase and along that staircase were small flags from all over the world. I was allowed to choose 1 flag each time we visited. Eventually, I had enough flags collected that my dad made me a display stand out of wood. I adored those flags, each so unique and I was proud to own them.
When my mom bought me my first scrapbook I would collect everything from napkins to maps from various parks we visited. I even saved my braces, and stitches, too. It’s all still tucked away in those old pages.
I eventually got into collected old stamps. I still have my entire stamp collection but I’m not to into any more. Hopefully one of my children will be interested in it one day.
Currently, I collected old and new copies of Wuthering Heights and Pride & Prejudice. I love stopping in old book stores and smelling, I mean browsing for those two books. When I was in Virginia last summer I stopped in an old book store in Williamsburg and found a copy of Wuthering Heights, and Jane Eyre, a perfect box set, each book had amazing illustrations in it. I cherish that book and wonder what kind of life it had before I came upon it.

I’m a book smeller too. There’s no shame in it. And I’m insanely jealous of your vintage Jane Eyre. That’s one of my favorite books ever! How fun that you collect so many cool things!
I can let you smell it when you visit! lol.
Another book smeller here. I also did the napkins for a while, forgot that with my list, and also flags (but little triangle ones of holiday parks) and stamps.
And as a cartographer I have to commend you on collecting maps. Lot of hard work goes into those.
Yeah, my flags were mini size. Maybe 1′ tall. I wish I still had them. I like looking back at my old maps and comparing them to new maps of the same places, things change so fast it’s nice to sit back and reflect back on how things use to be.
Does clutter count? I collect Hall Pottery – specifically their restaurantware line. I also collect John Norman books and have almost all of them. I seem to collect shoes and handbags as well although I’m not sure that’s on purpose.
You’ve got me interested in John Norman now. I need to find a book of his and then find some time to read it. Wish me luck.
What a wonderful thing to collect! My husband and I love old book shops and have passed the joy of discovering a used book onto our daughter. I’ve been collecting Nancy Drew books for her since she was 4 months old.
I wish I had all my books from my younger days, but I don’t. So like you I’ve been adding to my daughter’s book collection books I read as a child.
My mom used to collect stamps, and coins. I think it’s nice when you get to see your parents collections once you’re older. There’s always a story with every piece.
You’re right. Each piece to a collection does have a story, that’s a great way to look at it.
In the past year I have started collecting yarn. I mean, I will eventually use it, right?
My best friend and her mom do the same thing. They use it too, and knit some amazing things.
Every time I travel I found a little curio from that place that I love. It is fun to look back at all the memories from my travels.
That sounds like a great way to remember each trip.
I loved hearing about your collections!
Thanks Paula
I love the smell of books! It’s one of the reasons I will not convert to an e-reader!
Also why I haven’t bought an e-reader. I refuse.
